Numeracy at Northfield

Numbers matter – they help us make sense of the world, solve real-life problems, and make confident decisions every day.

Numeracy is more than just maths lessons. It is the ability to understand and use numbers in everyday life, across all subjects, and beyond school. At Northfield, we aim to develop pupils who can confidently think logically, solve problems, and apply mathematical skills in a range of real-life contexts.

What is Numeracy?

Numeracy involves a range of skills that allow pupils to engage with numbers effectively. These include:

  • Fluency with number – developing confidence with basic calculations and mental maths skills.
  • Process information effectively – selecting and using the right methods to work through numerical information.
  • Interpret data, charts and diagrams – understanding information presented in different visual forms and making sense of what it shows.
  • Solve problems – applying mathematical knowledge to find solutions, including in unfamiliar situations.
  • Make decisions using logical thinking and reasoning – using mathematical understanding to justify choices and solve real-life problems.
  • Application across subjects – using numeracy in areas such as science, geography, and technology.
  • Check answers for accuracy – reviewing work to identify mistakes and ensure solutions are correct.
  • Understand and explain solutions – describing methods and reasoning clearly, both verbally and in writing.

Building Numeracy Through Morning Form Time

At Northfield, selected year groups take part in dedicated numeracy activities during morning form time. These short, focused sessions are designed to build confidence and strengthen key mathematical skills over time.

Each session typically includes:

  • Arithmetic practice – helping pupils develop fluency and accuracy with core skills.
  • Mathematical questions in context – encouraging pupils to apply their knowledge to real-world situations.
  • Problem-solving challenges – promoting deeper thinking, resilience, and logical reasoning.

These activities support pupils in becoming more confident with numbers, improving retention of key skills, and strengthening links between maths and other curriculum areas. Over time, this consistent practice helps pupils approach mathematical tasks with greater independence and assurance.

Celebrating Numeracy

We also promote a positive and engaging maths culture through whole-school events and challenges. Pupils have opportunities to take part in fun activities linked to key mathematical celebrations such as Pi Day and National Numeracy Day.

These events are designed to spark curiosity, encourage participation, and show pupils that maths can be both enjoyable and relevant to everyday life.

Numeracy for all

We encourage all pupils and families to continue developing numeracy skills beyond the classroom. At Northfield, pupils use Sparx Maths for homework, where they can complete independent learning to strengthen their mathematical skills, build confidence, and develop fluency over time.

We also recommend a range of online resources that support numeracy in engaging and practical ways. Platforms such as BBC Bitesize and NRICH provide interactive activities, problem-solving tasks, and revision materials to help pupils deepen their understanding.

Pupils are also encouraged to take part in wider initiatives such as the National Numeracy Challenge, which offers personalised activities designed to improve confidence with numbers in everyday life.

These resources provide valuable opportunities for pupils to practise key skills, explore maths in different contexts, and develop a positive and confident approach to numeracy.
