Protected Characteristics

At Northfield School, pupils' personal development includes the opportunity to develop their understanding of Britain as a diverse and multicultural country and gain a real understanding and appreciation of others, their cultures, traditions, and ways of life. This involves the promotion of equality and diversity through the teaching of protected characteristics as outlined by the 2010 Equality Act which includes:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation

Equality and diversity are promoted in a variety of ways. Policies and procedures demonstrate that discrimination of any form is not tolerated within our school. The development of age-appropriate knowledge and understanding of protected characteristics including sexual orientation and gender reassignment is integrated into the RSE curriculum.

The promotion of equality and diversity through the curriculum is underpinned by our three core values of respect, resilience and honesty.
