SMSC

At Northfield School, as part of a broad and balanced curriculum, we promote the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development of pupils and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life with the aim of serving to develop character and personally develop our pupils.

SPIRITUAL
Pupils gain an understanding of different faiths and beliefs and have the opportunity to develop their own faith journey along the way.

Spiritual development creates a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, their peers and the world around them. It increases knowledge of and respect for different people's faiths, feelings and values.

MORAL
Pupils develop a strong moral compass to know the difference between right and wrong. They learn to respect and appreciate the views of others by showing empathy and compassion.

Moral development enables pupils to apply this understanding to their own lives, recognise legal boundaries and respect the rule of law.

SOCIAL
Pupils are encouraged and supported to socialise, cooperate and communicate. They will learn to form positive and meaningful relationships by communicating with respect.

Social development uses social skills in different contexts to help shape who pupils will become once they leave school. It develops pupils' acceptance and engagement with British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Pupils develop skills and attitudes that will allow them to make positive contributions to life in modern Britain.

CULTURAL
As well as learning about cultures from around the world, pupils will develop their understanding of their own culture to recognise similarities whilst valuing and celebrating differences.

Cultural development enables pupils to appreciate the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their heritage and that of others. They will have the ability to recognise and value things they have in common across all communities.
